I have fifteen years of experience in providing care to survivors of child sexual abuse.
Approximately 80% of my patients have suffered sexual abuse in childhood or have been exposed to the effects of abuse indirectly.
Many times, the initial reason for consultation is not the abuse itself but rather some of the symptoms or sequelae of the experienced trauma. This is, according to my interpretation, because sexual abuse has been normalized, naturalized, and overlooked. It often happens that parents have also been victims of sexual abuse in their childhoods and have not received adequate treatment, making it difficult for them to recognize danger signs for their own children.
This cancer in Salvadoran society does not respect gender, social class, religious beliefs, or political affiliations.
